Here’s a rundown of Jay Z and Kanye West’s friendship with the highs and lows author imageNarjas ZatatFriday 30 Nov 2018 6:11 pm Share this article via facebook Share this article via twitter Share this article via messenger Mandatory Credit: Photo by Sipa/REX/Shutterstock (800797ag) Kanye West and Jay Z Marc Jacobs Spring / Summer 2009 Fashion Show, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, New York, America – 08 Sep 2008 Jay often referred to Kanye as his little brother (Picture: Rex Features) Jay Z and Kanye West have always had somewhat of a tumultuous relationship, and speculation about the pair are on a constant high. People are always interested in the latest beef between two of the biggest names in hip hop. Meek Mill released his new song, What’s Free, the first since getting out of prison, and Jay Z spits some bars that suggest he’s a bit done with Kanye and his Make America Great Again antics. Jay contributed a verse to the track off Mill’s new album in which he addressed Kanye and that MAGA hat.
And it’s not pretty. ‘No red hat, don’t Michael and Prince me and Ye/They separate you when you got Michael and Prince’s DNA/I ain’t one of those house n****r you bought/My house like a resort/my house bigger than yours,’ he raps. Mr Carter denied the bar was about Kanye, and in his first tweet in over a year, wrote: ‘The line clearly meant don’t pit me against my brothers no matter what our differences are (red hat) now go pick up Meek album . Drake and Meek on there together.’ Despite this, many insist the verse seems to be referencing Ye’s pro-Trump stance, and it hasn’t stopped people from speculating about their (broken?) bromance. Kanye West’s MAGA hat makes him feel like superman (Picture: Getty) It rounds off what has been thus far a relationship filled with highs (in the beginning of their respective careers), and lows. Kanye began his career as a record producer and after spending time in his home city of Chicago working with local artists, got his big break helping to produce Jay Z’s track This Can’t Be Life which appeared on the 2000 album Dynasty: Roc La Familia. After going on to work with Jay Z on a number of his tracks, most famously helping to produce songs on The Blue Print album, Roc Nation eventually signed him as a rapper.
Here’s a timeline of Jay and Ye’s bromance and subsequent decoupling: 2009: Kanye and the VMA flop The infamous moment Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech after she won best female video for You Belong With Me was seared into our collective psyche. He walked on stage and announced, ‘Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!’ NEW YORK – SEPTEMBER 13: Kanye West (L) jumps onstage after Taylor Swift (C) won the “Best Female Video” award during the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall on September 13, 2009 in New York City. (Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty Images) Kanye’s VMAs performance was critcised heavily at the time and in years to come (Picture: Getty Images) At the time, Jay sort of jumped to his friend’s defence, but not before he let loose a few exasperated words. He told BBC Radio 1: ‘[Kanye’s actions were] inappropriate at the time [and] rude because it was her [Swift’s] moment but that’s the what he really felt. He added:
‘He’s [West] just a super passionate person. It’s really an awards show and I think it’s a bit of a blow out but of course it was rude. I think it was rude, but the way they’re treating him… He’s on the cover of every paper. He didn’t kill anybody. No one got harmed.’ 2011: Jay Z and Kanye collaborate on Watch The Throne album in a move of solidarity Not only is Watch the Throne a banger of an album, it also shows the pair of rappers throw it back to their early, brotherly days. The album went platinum and won seven Grammys, showing that they were absolute fire when they created together. It seemed as though nothing could break them apart. 2014: Beyoncé and Jay Z skip Kanye and Kim’s wedding Fast forward a few years, and it appears that a rift may have opened up between the self-professed bros. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West split (Instagram/Kim Kardashian) At the time Kanye hadn’t responded to Jay missing the wedding and said he was fine because Kim was there (Instagram/Kim Kardashian) Despite taking the media world by storm by often being photographed as a quadruplet (Kim, Beyoncé, Kanye and Jay), Jay Z shocked people when he and the wife skipped Kanye and Kim’s wedding (he later claimed on a track that he’d missed the wedding because he and Bey had been arguing). Beyoncé congratulated the pair in an Instagram post, but it was basically the equivalent of sending that friend you used to be tight with but aren’t anymore, a ‘Happy Birthday, have a great day x’ on Facebook. 2016: Kanye criticises Jay Z for not checking on them following Kim’s Paris robbery This was the year of Kanye letting loose. In October 2016 Kim Kardashian was held at gunpoint in her apartment in Paris, where robbers made off with millions of pounds worth of jewellery. A month later during the Saint Pablo Tour concert in Sacramento, Ye unleashed a 17-minute tirade in which he talked about radio, Beyoncé…and Jay Z. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images For Roc Nation) Kanye came out to say that in 2016 he suffered a mental break down (Picture: Kevin Mazur/Getty) He accused the fellow rapper of ignoring his family at a time of need. ‘Don’t call me, after the robbery and say, “how you feelin?” ‘You wanna know how I’m feelin? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house. Like we’re brothers. Let’s sit down.’ He broke the friendship down even more when he told the crowd their children hadn’t even had any play dates. ‘I can’t take this shit bro. Our kids have never even played together.’ Bleak. 2017: Jay Z releases album 4:44 in which he drops a number of Kanye disses Kill Jay Z. The track features lyrics that appear to be about his ex bestie Kanye, and at the time he insisted the song was not a ‘diss track’ and claimed he was talking about himself. Crucially, he did address the Sacramento rant, and said West had crossed a line. ‘It’s not even about Kanye, it really isn’t,’ Jay told Rap Radar. ‘His name is there, just because it’s just the truth of what happened. But the whole point is “You got hurt because this person was talking about you on a stage.” LOS ANGELES, CA – JULY 01: (L-R) Singer Beyonce, rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West and television personality Kim Kardashian attend the 2012 BET Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on July 1, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. He’s talked about me 100 times. He made a song called Big Brother. ‘We’ve gotten past bigger issues. But you brought my family into it, now it’s a problem with me. That’s a real, real problem. And he knows it’s a problem.’ Their 2017 drama was probably started as a result of a bitter battle between Ye and Jay about Tidal, as the former claimed they owed him $3million (£2.3million). December 2017: Jay Z addresses the feud and appears to try and bury the hatchet In an interview with New York Times’ T magazine, the rapper said: ‘I [talked to] Kanye the other day, just to tell him, like, he’s my brother. I love Kanye. I do. Kanye came into this business on my label. So I’ve always been like his big brother. And we’re both entertainers. It’s always been like a little underlying competition with your big brother. And we both love and respect each other’s art, too. So it’s like, we both — everyone wants to be the greatest in the world. You know what I’m saying?’ May 2018: Kanye brings up the missed wedding again Speaking to Charlamagne Tha God on iHeartRadio’s The Breakfast Club, he said: ‘I was hurt about them not coming to the wedding. I understand they were going through some things, but if it’s family, you’re not going to miss a wedding. BGUK_1220705 – ** RIGHTS: WORLDWIDE EXCEPT IN UNITED STATES ** LOS ANGELES, – After his recent controversial Twitter storm, Kanye West speaks with Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club” host Charlamagne tha God, about Jay Z, Obama, Trump and Mental Health. West speaks about his breakdown “I think I’m in a stronger place than I ever was, after the breakdown or as I like to say, the breakthrough,” which hospitalised West in 2016, was inspired by a variety of factors including “fear, stress, control, being controlled, [and] manipulation.” Kanye elaborated “I just wanted to say like there was elements about going to the hospital and having a breakdown or a breakthrough that was fire,” he said. “It was incredible, the feeling.” Now, West said, he wants to destigmatize the vocabulary surrounding mental health. “Something inspired in the wrong context will come off as, I don’t wanna say crazy because I also wanna change the stigma of crazy and I wanna change the stigma of mental health, period. West spoke about Jay Z and Beyonce skipping his wedding “I haven’t seen him, but I can feel him,” he said, adding that he was “hurt” by Jay and Beyonce skipping his wedding with Kim Kardashian. On Obama, Kanye reminisces spoke about the President calling him a “jackass”. “You know, he never called me to apologise” Pictured: Kanye West – Charlamagne tha God BACKGRID UK 1 MAY 2018 *BACKGRID DOES NOT CLAIM ANY COPYRIGHT OR LICENSE IN THE ATTACHED MATERIAL. You just start coming up with all type of crazy things in your head, like ‘Why?’ He added that he didn’t think he’d ‘ever asked’ Jay why he missed it. Now: Jay Z’s Meek Mill verse suggests the feud is far from over… It’s unclear what’s going on, and neither Jay nor Kanye have come out definitively to squash the beef. Meek Mill’s track seems to be an announcement that it’s not over, and given Kanye’s recent controversial rants about slavery being a ‘choice’ and his seeming support of Trump, the once-close friendship might be dead in the water.
